Resolved that the Minutes of the Economy and Infrastructure Policy Development & Delivery Committee held on 7 December 2017, be approved as a correct record.

Economy - Presentation by Phil Holmes, Head of Planning and City Regeneration.

Minutes:

The Head of Planning and City Regeneration provided a detailed and informative presentation on ‘Swansea and the City Region….An Economic Perspective’.

 

Details provided in the presentation included: -

 

·         Introducing Swansea…;

·         Connectivity;

·         Swansea Statistics and Our Strategic Sectors;

·         The Business Base;

·         Strategic Employment Sites;

·         Innovation, Learning, Quality of Life, Culture, Leisure & Sport;

·         Key Regional Statistics;

·         The Big Challenges;

·         The City Deal Response;

·         Key Local Regeneration Activities;

·         Working in Partnership;

·         Regeneration Programme;

·         The Implications of Brexit;

·         Welsh Government Prosperity for All and Economic Action Plan.

 

The Committee asked a number of questions which were responded to accordingly.  Discussions centred around the following: -

 

·         Productivity, GVA and comparisons with other authorities within the region;

·         Transport links, connectivity, potential Swansea Bay Metro and Welsh Government feasibility study looking at inter-connectivity between regions;

·         The Tidal Lagoon project; improving the Fabian Way gateway into the city;

·         Involving communities outside the city centre in the changes, improving the movement of transport within the city centre and attracting large shops to locate in Swansea;

·         The City Deal - improving employment prospects, training, skills and confidence of working age people;

·         The impact of the universities in Swansea and the work being undertaken;

·         Potential for the Felindre site;

·         Confidence in the planning process in Swansea.

 

Resolved that: -

 

1)    The contents of the presentation be noted;

2)    The presentation be circulated to the Committee.

Minutes:

The Chair presented an updated Work Plan 2017/18.

 

She added that the following items had been proposed for the Committee meeting on 8 March 2018: -

 

1)    Wind Street Pedestrianisation;

2)    Green Fleet.

 

Resolved that: -

 

1)    The contents of the report be noted;

2)    The additional items listed above for 8 March 2018 be added to the Committee Work Plan 2017/18.
