Amnesty on Waste (Update).

Minutes:

The Director of Place stated that there had been some confusion regarding the information Members sought.

Members referred to an initiative, held a few years ago, which allowed local residents to dispose of waste items correctly and conveniently within their wards.   The initiative was successful in reducing the instances of fly tipping and had received positive feedback from local residents.  Additionally, there was a facility that allowed residents to gain information on recycling.

The Director of Place advised that providing resources for mixed recycling would be a challenge, not least because there was no current budget allocation for this type of initiative.

Members noted the current recycling figures, issues with commercial waste, comparisons with neighbouring local authorities in relation to prosecutions and installation of covert cameras in fly tipping locations.

In response to Member questions, the Director of Place stated that some issues raised by Members were not in the terms of reference of the Policy Development Committee.  However, Officers would produce a report on the introduction of a pilot scheme, in the context of the Council’s recycling strategy.

Members further noted that should they wish, initiatives of this nature (provided they did not contradict current Council Policy) could be be funded within Community Budgets.

Resolved that a report be submitted to the meeting scheduled for 16 April, 2020.
