Minutes:

A presentation on ‘Community approaches to Support Healthy Food and

Drink Consumption’ was provided by Mary Wilson, Dr Nina Williams and Debra Morgan of Public Health Wales.

The Committee asked questions of the Presenting Officers who responded accordingly. Questions centred around: -

·         Possibility of Planning Restrictions in the vicinity of Schools;

·         Comparison and trend of statistics on the number of children and adults overweight/obese and the number of children showing evidence of dental decay;

·         Whether sugar should be the main focus in terms of improving health and diets, as previous health advice had focussed on fat;

·         Education of health / diet in schools had worked well, but there appeared to be issues with parents knowledge;

·         How to get parents to engage in initiatives and respond to advice;

·         Possibility and merit of taking a more hard line approach with parents who consistently provided unhealthy food to their children;

·         Co-ordination of established initiatives;

·         Possibility of broadening Schools Curriculums to include activities and learning surrounding growing your own vegetables;

·         Accessibility and ease of unhealthy options;

·         Better promotion of existing initiatives.

It was highlighted that educating people on making the right choices was a separate piece of work. The main focus of this presentation was to find ways to improve and support communities in accessing the right choices.

Councillor M C Child, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Healthy City, asked the Committee to consider whether sugar was the dietary issue they wished to focus upon and provide suggestions to drive it forward.

Updates on Commissioning Reviews. (Verbal)

Fiona Broxton.

Minutes:

The Contracting Officer (Domiciliary Care) Social Services, provided an update to the Committee on the Adult Services Commissioning Reviews.

She highlighted that the Domiciliary Care Commissioning Review was out to consultation until 10 February 2017. There had been a low response to the consultation from domiciliary care workers and she would look at potential social media campaigns to try and raise more awareness to improve response.

She added that one of the preferred options was to commission domiciliary care geographically and that improvements in the collection and reporting on performance data provided a greater insight into demand and need in particular areas across Swansea.

She also discussed using an innovation Lot as part of a future procurement exercise to engage with external partners on piloting new ways of working, which if successful could then be scaled up/rolled out across other areas in Swansea.

RESOLVED that the contents of the update be noted.
